100 years of MRW

United Kingdom – UK magazine ‘€˜Materials Recycling Week’€™ is celebrating its 100th birthday. First published on May 4 1912 as ‘€˜Waste Trade World’€™, it mirrored changing attitudes when altering its name to ‘€˜Materials Reclamation Weekly’€™ and then to its current title some two decades ago.

Writing in the latest issue, current Editor Emma Maier notes that the magazine has always looked to cover the full spectrum of recyclables – from feathers, bones, skins and hair in the early days to the modern streams of e-scrap and plastics.

She also observes that some of the issues were as relevant a century ago as they are today. ‘€˜A letter to the editor in August 1912 implored all scrap dealers to write to their MPs (Members of Parliament) to see that the Metal Dealers Bill was made more moderate to dealers while at the same time assisting the police with theft issues,’€™ she points out.

And she adds: ‘€˜Today, the scrap trade is a mature, high-tech industry supporting jobs and economic growth as well as environmental sustainability.’€™
