China – The Tibet Autonomous Region located in south-west China is preparing for its first resource recycling facility, which is due to start up at the end of June in the capital Lhasa.
An estimated US$ 4.1 million in total is being invested in the project to process around 200 000 tons per annum of metals, plastics and paper, according to Li Zhiqing, Manager General of a local waste recycling company participating in the venture.
The facility will span an area of 15.5 hectares some 12 km from downtown Lhasa. If the build goes according to plan, the project should be completed by October with full operation anticipated by the end of the year.
According to the Regional Commerce Department’s Deputy Head Zhou Hui, Tibet’s urban landscape has developed something of an international reputation for its lack of environmental standards as nearly all of its waste is transported to other regions for recycling. This is why the capital ‘will surely benefit’ from the Lhasa recycling venture, he notes.
