United States – The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) is loaning US$ 1.2 million to Canyon Plastics so it can upscale to a larger plant in the US state. The financial support will also cover equipment purchases, says Canyon’s President and CEO Kirit Gijera, while also creating around 40 jobs.
The loan comes under the recycle-market development zone programme used by CalRecycle to fund eligible businesses and non-profit organisations in designated areas. Canyon Plastics, a custom injection and blow moulding company, annually diverts 506 tons of plastics from California’s landfills but, under the terms of the deal, has agreed to re-direct an additional 582 tons.
Located just over a mile from Canyon’s established operation in Valencia, the new plant comprises a 30 000-square-foot building and leased warehouse space of up to 75 000 square feet. According to Mr Gijera, equipment is already being moved to the new facility and operations are scheduled to start in September. The former plant might yet be kept on, he adds.
Canyon offers custom solutions ‘from concept to completion’ for the aerospace, medical, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. It currently operates eight injection moulding machines and 14 blow moulding machines with a maximum shot size capacity of 5 pounds.
