Europe – Toyota Motor Europe has assigned Belgium-based global materials technology group Umicore with the task of recycling the lithium-ion batteries from its two latest models.
The newly-forged collaboration between the companies relates to the car maker’s recently-launched Toyota Prius + and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid; the aim is to ensure Toyota complies and even outperforms the European Commission’s recycling efficiency directive.
Umicore was selected as a partner because of its ‘unique rechargeable battery recycling process’, which is driven by patented Ultra High Temperature (UHT) smelting technology. Toyota further explains that the Belgian specialist is currently the only player in the world operating two battery pack dismantling lines for hybrid vehicles and full electric vehicles.
Earlier this year, the well-known car brand shared its plans to collect and recycle batteries from the Toyota Prius hybrid cars as they reach 11 years of age, though the company states this whole concept ‘is still in its infancy’.
