Finland/Japan – According to equipment specialist Metso, the M&J pre-shredders it delivered to the Japan-based Kouki Corporation earlier this year are ready to play their part in cleaning up 7 million tons of waste resulting from the tsunami of March 2011.
Currently being integrated at Kouki’s incineration plant, the pre-shredders will process debris in a designated section of the disaster area. The exceptionally high waste density caused by the huge amount of mud will prove to be challenging, says Metso.
The Ishinomaki-based plant also boasts six feeding systems, a heavy-duty excavator, a feeder belt and sorting lines. Metso has installed its Japan Customer Support Manager at the Kouki facility, with the responsibility to oversee other, similar units soon to be activated in the same region.
At present, the clean-up efforts involve a 300-strong team per shift.
