China – Privately-owned Hongying Shipbreaking Co. of China expects to commission its yards on Zhoushan Island near Shanghai in the coming months, it has announced.
Hongying’s two latest yards will span 23 hectares and 250 metres of deepwater shoreline, incorporating a shipbreaking platform as well as two harbour basins. They will be equipped with scrap cutting and shearing facilities, capable of processing up to 250 000 tonnes per annum.
A Hongying official has told Platts Steel Business Briefing: ‘We have enough vessels to dismantle since shipping companies are scrapping old vessels amid the sluggish shipping market.’ Confirming that the company remains unfazed by the chill in the domestic scrap market, he added: ‘We will consider selling part of the ship scrap to maintain our business and will stock the rest at the yard until the market improves.’
High-quality scrap plate will be sold to the region’s re-rollers to manufacture deck plate and flange plate, the company stated. Meanwhile, it is investing in establishing relationships with major scrap buyers in eastern China to supply them with processed ferrous scrap. The Chinese government aims to make Zhoushan a shipbreaking centre by encouraging existing and new breaking businesses to settle there.
