China – According to China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Commerce and National Development and Reform Commission, plastic recycling companies must henceforth report any imports that are banned or contravene environmental protection rules. This move is deemed necessary to ensure the highest possible quality of plastics imports, the Chinese government has stated.
In future, China will enforce regulations that prohibit the import of unwashed, post-consumer plastics. The selling of plastics left over from the sorting of imported plastics and paper will no longer be allowed either. Additionally, transferring imported material to a company other than that entitled by the import licence will be banned.
The Chinese government has also assigned local environmental protection agencies the duty of closely inspecting plastic recycling companies. They are subsequently to publish a list both of qualified recyclers and of companies that have failed inspections. As a result, only companies that have met the new standards will be able to import plastics from January 1 next year.
In other changes, recycling of domestic as well as imported plastic in residential areas will be prohibited, while a ban on processing plastic without sufficient water treatment facilities is also being introduced. According to the Chinese government, these new measures will be implemented from October 1 this year.
