Recycling takes to the roads in the USA

United States – According to US company Idaho Sand & Gravel, well over 73 million tons of asphalt was reused and reclaimed by road contractors across America in 2011, thus reducing construction costs by millions of dollars.

The company contributed to this cause through its new Eco-Mix technology, which provides a suitable application for recycled asphalt pavement while also cutting down on energy consumption and emissions. For its efforts, the road materials specialist earned the US National Asphalt Pavement Association’€™s 2011 Diamond Achievement Award in recognition of its use of sustainable materials.

Additional help has come from P.J. Keating Co., which uses over 140 000 tons of recycled asphalt per year in the production of its hot-mix asphalt in public and private projects. The asphalt contractor is one of a number of companies to incorporate end-of-life roof shingles in its material because these can boost performance through improved dust reduction and resistance to rutting and cracking.

These initiatives are supported by the US Federal Highway Administration, which has promoted the use of recycled highway materials in pavement construction for many years as a means of reducing waste in a cost-effective way.
