Li Tong: China’s official mobile phones recycler

China – China Electronics Enterprises Association (CEEA) has appointed Li Tong Enviro Tech Co. Ltd – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Li Tong Group – as the sole official recycler of end-of-life mobile phones across China.

Li Tong has been selected to serve as the pilot company for the Comprehensive Use of Used Mobile Phones Scheme, which was initiated by China’€™s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the CEEA in order to develop, implement and manage a reverse supply chain to recycle China’€™s discarded handsets. The pilot project is also part of the country’€™s overall strategy to achieve a recycling target of 95% by 2015 under its 12th Five-Year Plan.

According to Li Tong, its 20 000-square-metre plant at Jiangmen will be the end-of-life treatment base and will be able to process around 30 000 tonnes of electronic scrap per year. Additional services – such as collection, data wiping, component recovery and disassembly – will also be managed by the recycler.

Recycling options and carbon reduction have become prime concerns for a great number of manufacturers, remarks Li Tong Group’€™s Managing Director Tony Wang. He believes the pilot scheme will provide ‘€˜very meaningful data’€™ which will help stakeholders in the private and public sectors to improve waste reduction, handling strategies and the design stage of electronics and electrics.
