US firm TerraCycle, which specialises in ‘hard-to-recycle’ waste management, has acquired Connecticut-based NLR.

The deal brings NLR into TerraCycle Commercial, the company’s division focused on regulated and universal waste streams. These include batteries, electronics, mercury-containing lamps and other materials requiring specialised treatment.

NLR becomes the fourth company to join the division following previous acquisitions of Air Cycle Corporation, Complete Recycling Solutions and North Coast Services.

Expanding collection capacity

The acquisition strengthens TerraCycle’s presence across the north-eastern United States. It also increases collection and processing capacity for regulated waste materials.

NLR customers will continue working with existing contacts while gaining access to TerraCycle’s wider recycling services. These include programmes for hard-to-recycle materials and bulk collection solutions.

In addition, customers will benefit from access to certified electronics recycling facilities operated by Complete Recycling Solutions and North Coast Services.

These sites process lighting waste, batteries, electronics, cathode ray tubes and mercury containing products in compliance with environmental regulations.

Larger recycling platform

NLR co-founder Robert E. Robert will continue managing the business. Meanwhile, the company’s East Windsor team will remain in place to ensure service continuity. ‘Joining TerraCycle is the right next step,’ Robert says. ‘The combination of local service and greater resources allows us to do even more for customers.’

TerraCycle founder and ceo Tom Szaky says the acquisition supports the company’s strategy of expanding regulated waste services. ‘NLR strengthens our reach and collection capacity across the Northeast. We continue to invest in the solutions this industry requires.’

Szaky adds that the transaction was largely funded through TerraCycle’s recent capital raising activities.

The acquisition forms part of a broader effort to expand recycling, reuse and recycled-content solutions across commercial and consumer waste streams.
