United Kingdom – UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is helping supporters of the annual Comic Relief charity event to transform the campaign’s plastic red noses into carpet underlay. The polyurethane foam noses were bought on a massive scale at Sainsbury’s locations across the country and are now on their way to the Northamptonshire factory of leading UK carpet underlay manufacturer Ball & Young where they will be recycled into its award-winning Cloud 9 range.

‘The noses will be processed in our state-of-the-art factory where they will be chipped, bonded and rejuvenated to attain the quality necessary for our carpet underlay,’ states Ann Shaw, sales director at Ball & Young. Katherine How, Sainsbury’s Comic Relief partnership manager, adds: ‘The success of Red Nose Day shows our customers want to help transform lives across the UK and Africa. We also know they care about the environment so we’€™re making it really easy for them to recycle the red noses.’

The first-ever Red Nose Day was held in 1988 and raised over £15 million (US$ 22.5 million). This year, the Comic Relief event raised a record £75 million for charity, partly through sales of increasingly popular merchandise such as the plastic noses.
