Canadians recycled more than 8 000 tonnes of batteries in 2025 through collection programmes run by Call2Recycle. The scheme is proud to say it’s the highest annual collection total in the organisation’s entire history.

The milestone also pushes the national total past 60 000 tonnes collected since the programme began nearly 30 years ago. This is equivalent to the weight of roughly 500 blue whales.

The achievement highlights growing public awareness around battery safety and recycling. Improper disposal of batteries, particularly lithium-ion units, increases fire risks in waste and recycling streams. By contrast, responsible collection helps recover valuable materials while reducing environmental impact.

Sustained engagement

Joe Zenobio, president and ceo of Call2Recycle Canada, says the record year reflects sustained public engagement. ‘Reaching this result in a single year and surpassing 60 000 tonnes overall is an extraordinary milestone. Canadians are choosing to recycle responsibly to reduce fire risks and protect the environment for future generations.’

To mark National Battery Day on 18 February, landmarks across the country lit up in support of battery recycling. Participating sites included BC Place and Canada Place in Vancouver, the Calgary Tower, the CN Tower in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Nova Scotia Province House, St John’s City Hall and La Grande Roue de Montréal.

15 000 collection points

National Battery Day aims to remind consumers to collect, protect and return used batteries to designated drop-off points. Materials recovered through the programme are processed and reclaimed for future use, supporting Canada’s transition towards a more circular economy.

Call2Recycle operates a nationwide network of more than 15 000 collection locations, covering single-use household batteries, rechargeable batteries, e-bike batteries and electric vehicle batteries. The organisation also manages dedicated schemes such as Recycle Your Vapes in Québec and an industry-led EV Battery Recovery Programme.
