Multinational carmaker Stellantis showcased its end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling solutions at the Pollutec expo in Lyon. They are the result of a long-running partnership with French industry player Soremo.
Stellantis and Soremo have created a closed-loop system for aluminium from ELV engines. Engines collected from its ELV Circular Economy Hub in Turin, Italy and selected treatment partners are processed into ingots. These ingots go back into producing new engines, reducing environmental impact and conserving resources.
Stellantis’ circular economy business unit Sustainera runs the recycling initiative. Its unique material flow management system boosts the recovery of aluminium, copper plastics, and batteries as well as enhancing parts and after-sales activities.
Circular engines
Soremo collects and processes over 60 000 tonnes of ELV engines annually. The company recovers aluminium, iron, copper and plastics, refining aluminium into high-quality ingots for Stellantis’ Mulhouse foundry.
The partners were promoting the joint venture Valorauto at Pollutec. They emphasise it supports B2B and B2C ELV management, enabling component recovery and recycling. ‘Our network strengthens the recycling value chain and secures critical materials for Stellantis’ operations,’ comments Jean-Philippe Imparato, Stellantis’s ceo for the European region.
Brazilian ELVs
Stellantis is also expanding globally. In August, it commissioned an ELV dismantling facility in São Paulo, Brazil. EUR 5 million is being invested in the venture, which will process around 8 000 vehicles per year. This complements the company’s first hub in Turin which became operational in 2023.
