United States – US bicycle brands Trek and REI have joined forces with Alchemy Goods to create a nationwide bike tube recycling network. Their mission is to collect one million bike tubes by the end of 2014.
Used tubes collected when shop mechanics service bikes or when customers drop off their old bikes will be shipped to Alchemy Goods’ 5300-square-foot warehouse and workshop in Seattle for sorting and subsequent ‘hand-crafting’ into bags, seat belts, wallets and other accessories. These products will be sold online as well as in numerous bike shops and boutiques throughout the USA.
According to the new partners, the network is already represented in ‘nearly every state’ and includes over 600 Trek bicycle dealers and 1800 retailers in addition to REI stores and independent bike shops. The network is aiming to collect over 200 000 bike tubes by the end of this year – ‘more than double what was collected in 2012’, the companies note.
