Copper producer Aurubis AG has commissioned an innovative, fully automated sample preparation process at its Hamburg site.
The new system will handle up to 20 000 samples per year, verifying scrap quality and composition with laboratory precision. Aurubis says this sets new standards in the recycling sector while more than doubling capacity.
The non-ferrous metals specialist already launched an advanced robotics sampling system at its site in Lünen, Germany, last year. Aurubis invested over EUR 6 million in this state-of-the-art process.
Ready in 24 hours
Modular technology plays a central role in the new system, according to Aurubis coo Tim Kurth. It handles electronic scrap as well as slags, catalysts, sludges, concentrates and anode slimes.
Tests have shown that the automated process can cut the time needed for sample preparation from five days to just one. ‘This offers an unparalleled level of versatility,’ says Kurth. ‘With this system, we are taking a major step forward and further solidifying our position as a trailblazer in complex metallurgy.’
Higher reliability
As well as increasing efficiency, the technology also features state-of-the-art filter and exhaust systems that enhance safety and environmental protection. Automation within a closed system supported by modern authentication processes improves reliability.
‘Our suppliers will directly benefit from reduced throughput times and consistently high-quality sample preparation,’ says Aurubis plant manager Michael Jordan. He calls the innovation ‘another significant milestone in our automation journey’ strengthening the company’s competitiveness.
Jordan points out that a similar facility has been operating successfully at the Lünen recycling site since 2024. It served as a model for the installation in Hamburg. Additional sites will be equipped with advanced sampling systems in the near future.
