Europe – Germany-based recycler Alba is to open a new export terminal near the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. To be brought into service from January 1 2014, the facility is the result of a reorganisation programme to strengthen the international position of Alba, which focuses on environmental services and the supply of raw materials, mainly ferrous scrap.
At 27 000 square metres, the terminal is five times the size of the Dordrecht facility in the Netherlands which it replaces, allowing the company to store up to 200 000 tonnes of scrap metal on site. Vessels with a capacity of up to 50 000 tonnes will be able to use the terminal. The site is close to Amsterdam’s main Schiphol airport, as well as to motorway and rail links.
‘The new terminal is part of our long-term overall strategy to strengthen our international orientation,’ explains Alba’s ceo Axel Schweitzer. ‘From this point of view, the building and leasing is an important step.’
Also as part of the company’s reorganisation, Alba has sold its steel and metal recycling subsidiary Interseroh of Dortmund in Germany to TSR Recycling. ‘Against the background of the rapidly growing interest in ”Recycling – Made in Germany” abroad, we will align much more internationally and deepen our value chain without questioning our home base,’ Schweitzer states.
