Finnish recycling major Kuusakoski is to close its US e-scrap processing plants because of ‘ongoing profitability challenges’.
The company will cease operations at its two Illinois sites this year, ending its presence in the US market.
The decision follows an extensive evaluation of strategic objectives and an unsuccessful effort to reverse its financial performance in the region. Despite these efforts, managers decided that continuing its operations in the US was unsustainable.
‘Our US team has made significant contributions over the years and we sincerely appreciate their dedication and hard work,’ says company president Mikko Kuusilehto. ‘As we move through this transition, we are committed to supporting all affected employees.’
Smooth transition
Kuusakoski remains focused on regions where it excels in recycling and sustainability. The company says it aims to strengthen its role in the circular economy by prioritising markets where it can provide the most value to its customers.
The closure will be managed in a controlled manner throughout 2025, the company says, ensuring a smooth transition for employees and stakeholders.
