United Kingdom – With the completion of its Alconbury facility in the UK, the first commercial-scale plant for laminated plastics and aluminium packaging recycling is now a reality, Enval has announced.
Scheduled to be on stream by the end of the year, the ‘one-of-a-kind’ plant will boast an annual processing capacity of 2000 tonnes of laminated packaging material, according to Enval.
The facility will also look to treat the non-paper output from beverage carton recycling. Ultimately, the packaging will be transformed into some 200 tonnes of aluminium and 1400 tonnes of unrefined oil through pyrolysis. The recycled aluminium produced will be worth as much as 60% of the equivalent amount of raw aluminium, Enval’s business development director David Boorman has told Material Recycling World.
‘This is a material that at the moment is going to landfill or incineration,’ he stated. ‘When we start showing the financial returns of recovery of the aluminium, it starts becoming really attractive.’
