Running this magazine is hard work
but it’s also fun. Never a dull moment,
I would say.
One of the great things about my job
is I get the chance to go places and
meet nice and interesting people.
My latest trip was to Turkey (I should
say Türkiye – which is the new, official
spelling), together with my colleague
Judith Wanjala. We visited recyclers
and equipment suppliers on a three-
day road trip. You can read about
them on pages 16-23 of this issue.
I’ve been in Türkiye (back then: Turkey)
on many occasions but mostly with a
backpack and on a low budget. I
remember in 1986 it took me nine
hours in an overheated bus to get
from Istanbul to Izmir which is about
450 km or so. Different times.
This time we drove by a convenient
rental car in less than four hours along
the new Istanbul-Izmir motorway. What
a difference. Great highway, spectacu-
lar views.
The petrol stations are spacious build-
ings – almost shopping malls – with big
buffet restaurants serving delicious
fresh food. Another thing: they
seemed to be well-prepared for
e-mobility. EV charging units are pop-
ping up on a large scale, thanks to
Tesla.

PS:
I think changing Turkey to Türkiye isn’t
a bad idea after all. I mean, it will defi-
nitely remove any confusion with fes-
tive birds (Thanksgiving) and maybe
also stop any connection with the
English meaning of ‘something that
fails badly’. That certainly doesn’t
apply to those businesses we visited
there recently.
At the same time, the word Türkiye
does not have the same flow in the
English language as it does in Turkish.
Perhaps ‘Turkia’ would have been a
better fit.
