A leading provider of smart technology for lithium-ion battery recycling, Germany’s Barradas is setting new standards when it comes to innovation and sustainability.

Battery recycling plays a crucial role in sustainable development and resource security. Lithium-ion batteries, used in electric vehicles and many other devices, contain valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt. These metals are only available in limited quantities and are often mined under environmentally damaging and physically dangerous conditions.

Only through effective recycling can these materials be recovered and reused, reducing dependency on new raw
materials and minimising the ecological footprint of battery production. Barradas has established itself as one
of the leading providers in environmental technology and lithium-ion battery recycling. With its many years
of experience and comprehensive know-how, the company sets new standards.

BEST PRACTICES

The most advanced recycling plants from Barradas, such as those at Stena Recycling in Halmstad, Sweden and
Librec in Biberist, Switzerland specialise in shredding lithium-ion batteries and disassembling them into their
components.

This process produces the ‘black mass’ which contains the valuable metals. In further processing steps, these metals can be extracted by the purchasers of the black mass and reintroduced into the cycle, eg for the production of new battery materials.

FOUR TONNES PER HOUR

The plants developed by Barradas can process these batteries on an industrial scale of up to four tonnes per hour, thus making a significant contribution to the circular economy. Innovative technologies such as inert shredding, the use of specially developed vacuum dryers, and efficient delamination processes for the gentle preparation of battery materials, are highly efficient and reduce the environmental impact of recycling.

Barradas is rightly proud of this ‘state-of-the-art’ technology, which boasts a recovery rate of over 98% and a black mass purity of – according to the processors – ‘Champions League quality’.

TRUE PIONEER

Founded in 1997, Barradas offers comprehensive solutions for waste treatment, recycling and resource recovery. With a strong focus on sustainability, it has earned an excellent reputation. Its other business areas include the development and construction of recycling plants for refrigeration units, WEEE and old tyres as well as its own proven shredding
technology for various applications.

ENGINEERING EXPERTISE

In 2018, Barradas transitioned to plant engineering and achieved an international breakthrough with its first recycling plant delivered in France. Since then, plant engineering has become increasingly important for the company and its customers.

Through continuous research and development, the company minimises its customers’ ecological footprint and implements efficient, environmentally friendly solutions.

With new plants and innovative processes, Barradas contributes to environmenal protection and raw material security, strengthens the local economy, and creates jobs. It is proud to be part of this important development and to help lay the foundation for a more sustainable future.
