Hydro to double can recycling capacity

Germany – Global rolled aluminium products provider Hydro has invested Euro 45 million (US$ 62 million) in the development of a new, integrated recycling line for used beverage cans at its facility in Neuss, Germany. Growing demand is anticipated for recycled aluminium – especially for packaging applications, the company notes.

Handling a wide range of scrap, the new line will increase Hydro′s annual recycling capacity of 50 000 tonnes to more than 100 000 tonnes. According to company ceo Oliver Bell, the investment ′underlines the position of Hydro as one of the leading innovators in the industry′.

Its sensor-based sorting technology has been developed by the company′s own research department in co-operation with leading equipment manufacturers, it adds. The recycling line, scheduled for completion by the end of 2015, will create around 40 new jobs.
