Belgian firm Avesta Battery & Energy Engineering plans to set up a EUR 1 billion battery recycling hub in Bulgaria.
Avesta aims to recycle 50 000 tonnes of end-of-life automotive batteries per year in the Burgas area. Its ambitious plans include constructing a ‘gigafactory’ in Stara Zagora and what is claimed to be Europe’s largest R&D centre in Plovdiv.
The production site will have an initial capacity of 10 GWh per year, scaled up to 20 GWh. The entire project will be implemented over the next five years and could create more than one thousand direct jobs.
As a first step, Avesta intends to break ground on the R&D facility in September 2024 before working on the recycling plant.
