Alliance forged over blast furnace technology

Europe – Advanced technologies leader Tenova and Italian mini-mill expert Danieli have partnered with Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering (NSENGI) to combine and commercialise their Energiron DR technology with an optimised blast furnace technology.

The alliance will see the parties pursue joint research and development activities to enhance the syngas technology developed and owned by NSENGI. The ′ultimate objective′ is to establish a new ironmaking technology which will reduce CO2 emissions and operating costs, while increasing productivity and/or decreasing capital expenditure for integrated steelmaking facilities.

The charging of specialised DRI to the blast furnace, produced by Energiron with a high carbon content and its reduction ratio adjusted, is said to target a ′significant decrease′ in blast furnace production cost compared to traditional DRI charging methods.

Following the collaboration, the companies will also provide the joint marketing of existing direct reduction technology to blast furnace customers.
