WEEELABEX ‘best of the best’ in e-sector

Europe – The European Union’s LIFE programme has crowned WEEELABEX, the Electric and Electronic Equipment Label of Excellence, as the ‘best of the best’ environmental project of 2013. Its award marks the venture’s success in developing ‘strict and clear’ new standards for e-scrap recycling and independent control of this particular waste stream.

WEEELABEX provides uniform rules for the entire e-scrap sector, from collection and transport to processing and reporting to authorities. The Netherlands was one of the first EU nations to make the rules mandatory for industry operators. This means that, from July 2015, Dutch businesses may only hand over e-scrap to certified companies that have committed to registering all the material they treat.

WEEELABEX has become an international benchmark reaching far beyond Europe. Project members report that e-scrap management is becoming an ′increasingly cross-border activity with significant competitive pressures′. They underline how important it is that e-scrap management companies do not seek competitive advantage by implementing less environmentally friendly practices.

It is anticipated that other EU countries will incorporate the WEEELABEX standards into national law. also, a translation of its requirements has been created for the Chinese market.
