United Kingdom – UK-based battery collection and recycling company G & P Batteries claims to have doubled its capacity thanks to an improved automated sorting system.
In 2012, G & P was the first company in Europe to install the system developed by Refind Technologies, a Swedish company specialising in sorting equipment. Since then, the firm has been working on a new model capable of sorting ‘twice as many’ batteries as the original.
G & P now sorts around 3 million cells per week via this system, which is designed to recognise and separate the most common battery brands and chemistries so as to accelerate the sorting process. The improvement will enable the recycler ‘to continue to increase volumes of collected batteries’ while helping the UK to meet its battery recycling obligations at both national and EU level, according to G & P.
In 2014, the UK is aiming to collect 35% of batteries placed on the market, an increase of 5% on last year.
