Emeco turns plastic bottles into chairs

United States – Emeco, a US furniture company founded in 1944 to make chairs for the US Navy, is now creating its furniture from recycled aluminium and plastic.

For example, its 111 Navy chair uses 9 pounds of recycled PET, which is equivalent to 111 bottles. Since the launch of the product in 2011, Emeco has recycled 12 million bottles into chairs. Meanwhile, the Broom Chair is made from recycled industrial sweepings, and the company′s SU collection uses wood reclaimed from old buildings and carved into new furniture by Pennsylvania Amish artisans.

The company also offers a range of furniture using eco-concrete comprising recycled glass bottles and cement. Recycled PET seats are made of 75% post-industrial and 25% post-consumer materials.

Emeco uses top names – such as Starck, Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Konstantin Grcic and Nendo – to design its furniture, and works with multi-national corporations such as Starbucks and The Coca-Cola Co.
