Europe – Scrap dealer Charles Newton, whose family has run UK business Newton Metal Recycling for four generations, has been told to pay a sum of £60 000 (around US$ 100 000) after being caught with copper cable that had been reported stolen. Local judge Colin Burn ordered the businessman to pay up or face 16 months in prison.
The 66-year-old scrap yard owner was arrested at his Wingate premises in north-east England following a police operation. Undercover officers offered him a batch of copper cable clearly marked as belonging to telecommunications giant BT. Newton accepted the material despite having recently received a warning from an anti-theft unit not to participate in the illegal trade of stolen scrap.
In March of this year, Newton had been given a suspended prison sentence at Durham Crown Court after he admitted knowingly handling stolen goods.
