US scrap major continues expansion and starts up second shredder

United States – Already with a firm base in the north east of the USA, Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling has taken over the Murtagh scrap yard in Rome, New York. The acquisition comes as Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling prepares to start up its second shredder – located in New Castle, Pennsylvania – in the early part of next year.

Adam Weitsman, managing director of Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling, calls the Murtagh yard ‘the most strategic location acquired to date as it is perfectly situated in the state where we don’t yet have as large a presence’.

The new owner is investing US$ 3 million to renovate the yard and replace equipment. ‘We will turn this scrap yard into the market leader in the region within three months,’ comments Weitsman.

The Murtagh yard brings to 15 the number of Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling scrap handling operations throughout Pennsylvania and New York. This year, they will process a total of 1 million tonnes of ferrous scrap and 140 000 tonnes of non-ferrous scrap.
