Crude steel production 1.8% higher in year to November

Global – Crude steel production in both the EU-28 and China suffered year-on-year declines in November, falling 0.8% and 0.2%, respectively, to 14.256 million tonnes and 63.3 million tonnes. But for the first 11 months of the year as a whole, the former’€™s output was 2.3% higher than in January-November 2013 at 156.732 million tonnes while the latter’s increased by 1.9% to 748.67 million tonnes, according to latest statistics from the World Steel Association (WSA).

Similarly with Japan, November’s production was 1.1% lower than in the same month last year at 9.175 million tonnes whereas year-to-date output showed an increase of 0.4% to 101.667 million tonnes. For the USA, meanwhile, crude steel production in November mirrored the 11-month average increase of 1.5% in reaching 7.209 million tonnes.

Among the world’s leading steelmaking nations, the largest year-on-year production declines in November were recorded by Turkey (-8.6%) and troubled Ukraine (-28.6%). As a result, their respective outputs in January-November this year were 1.7% and 16.1% lower than in the corresponding period last year.

The 65 countries reporting their results to the WSA produced a grand total of 130.525 million tonnes of crude steel in November for a year-on-year gain of 0.1% while the 11-month cumulative total of 1.498 billion tonnes represented an increase of 1.8% over the 1.471 billion tonnes of January-November last year.
