added a note of caution: ‘The outlook
for ferrous looks very bullish in the
near to medium term. Given the cur-
rent worldwide economic scenario, a
major concern for everyone will be
how economies manage long-term
inflation.
Analysts Market Research Future
(MRF) concluded the pandemic had
had a mostly positive impact on the
metal recycling market revenues. ‘On
one side, recyclers faced various prob-
lems, ranging from attracting workers
during the lockdown to collect, segre-
gate and recycle metal scrap to deliv-
er recycled products. On the other
hand, the pandemic helped the metal
recycling industry survive in supply
and demand changes.’ MRF says recy-
cled ferrous metals comprise only 40%
of total production and they argue
that inefficient machinery and recy-
cling processes are curbing market
growth.
STEEL PRODUCTION
World crude steel production in May
was 174.4 million tonnes (Mt), a 16.5%
increase compared to May 2020. This
is a less dramatic annual increase than
the 23.3% growth reported in April
when total output was 169.5 Mt.
