Strautmann has introduced the
RotorCut for use in the recycling
of packaging.
Bundled materials are put into the
machine either manually or, in the
case of larger quantities, by using a
fork-lift. A slow-running crimper
opens up the commodity and, through
exerting pressure, empties it. During
processing of, for example, filled PET
bottles, cans and other soft packaging
materials, liquids are collected sepa-
rately. The packaging is then con-
veyed along a gutter to compactors,
briquetting presses or containers.
Requiring minimal human involve-
ment, the system is easy to transport
through use of a hand lift and can be
integrated into existing compaction
concepts. According to the manufac-
turer, throughputs of up to 12 000
bundles per hour can be achieved.

Compact NIR spectrometers
High-performance scanning
technology specialist HiperScan
GmbH has unveiled the SGS2500
version of its Scanning Grating
Spectrometers (SGS).
These compact, rugged near-in-
frared (NIR) units are designed as
versatile OEM spectrometers for
high throughputs in quality control,
including incoming/outgoing inspec-
tion, routine inspection and process
control in such areas as recycling.
The SGS2500 features a broad
spectral range from 1300 to 2500 new-
tonmetres that scans over 3000 sam-
ples at 10 metres per second at a spec-
tral resolution of 13 newtonmetres us-
ing a two-stage InGaAs detector.
Both the SGS2500 and the
SGS1900 boast SMA fibre connec-
tors although direct coupling is also
possible owing to excellent stray
light suppression. The units are con-
sidered to be particularly suited to
mobile applications owing to their
compact size, ruggedness and low
power consumption.
The standard data interface uses
USB; Ethernet or RS232 can be pro-
vided on request. Software includes
SpectraCon for Windows, a myInstru-
ments driver and a document DLL for
direct coupling to any software.

Technology developed by
Sweden’s Intermercato AB is said
to solve the problem of dynamic
weighing of a hanging load when
it comes to heavy-duty material
handlers.
According to the company, its XW
E AUT series weighing equipment
functions without operator interven-
tion; the scale can be activated at a
certain trigger value or by the opera-
tor pushing a switch. In both cases,
however, the weight registration,
takes place automatically when lift-
ing the load.
Targeted at the scrap recycling
sector, the new equipment boasts a
maximum measuring range of 20
tonnes. Depending on the operator,
the weight of the load and also
the distance between the load and the
machine, acceleration will normally
vary and thereby render accurate
weighing in motion extremely prob-
lematical. This new radio-operated
accelerometer scale will increase the
accuracy of weighing when in motion
tests carried out by The Swedish
Technological Institute show, the
manufacturer says.
The XW E AUT series of scales
makes use of a specially-designed,
temperature-compensated strain
gauge which is protected against
overload (the load cell is insensitive
to loads beyond the measuring range)
and is not exposed to the torque im-
posed on the scale by the rotator.
Intermercato AB also supplies
crane scales for use in the recycling
of household refuse such as glass
containers, and also scales for use on
forwarders when collecting forest
residues.

Innov-X debuts QXR-M metals sorter
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) special-
ist Innov-X Systems is introduc-
ing a QXR Series product for use
in metal recycling applications.
The fully-automated, high-vol-
ume QXR-M (metals) version posi-
tively identifies and sorts mixed
metal scrap into product-specific cat-
egories based on highly-specific ma-
terial chemistry. According to the
US company, this high-volume sys-
tem can achieve sorting levels in ex-
cess of 95% and separation of more
than 90% based on Innov-X’s proven
XRF technology.
The custom-designed system is
said to maintain its accuracy on
clean, wet, dry, dirty or coated mate-
rials. Applications for the QXR-M in-
clude: extracting copper (or copper
alloys) from heavies; sorting alu-
minium product by alloy content;
cleaning and grading stain-
less steel; and extracting
meatballs, coins, pre-
cious metals, plastics,
glass and other
materials.

Accurate weighing with Intermercato
A typical QXR system uses a con-
veyor-mounted XRF spectrometer
and a camera: the latter senses ma-
terial while the former determines
its elemental composition. The sys-
tem, through defined data parame-
ters, actuates one of the downstream
diverter mechanisms – all of which
are precisely synchronised via high-
performance PLC technology. The
material is then accurately directed
to the appropriate collection bin or
belt conveyor.
