The 15th International Trade
Fair for Water, Sewage, Refuse
and Recycling (IFAT) will fea-
ture an impressive array of
innovative technology and
cost-efficient solutions aimed
at the waste management and
recycling sectors.
The organisers expect the
2008 show to be even larger than
that of 2005 when IFAT was last
staged. Exhibition space has ex-
panded to 192 000 square me-
tres, which is 22 000 square me-
tres or 13% more than was avail-
able at IFAT 2005. An even
greater increase of 18% has tak-
en place in the amount of space
booked by international ex-
hibitors. In 2005, the event at-
tracted more than 109 000 trade
visitors from 166 nations.
IFAT 2008 will also feature a
programme of trade conferences,
symposia and forums at which
exhibitors and associations will
discuss current product develop-
ments, trends and market condi-
tions. Key events will include the
14th European Water, Waste-
water and Solid Waste Sympo-
sium and the Waste Treatment
Forum. In addition, there will be
a regional focus on Central and
Eastern Europe (CEE Day) as
well as on the following coun-
tries: China, India, Japan, Rus-
sia and Saudi Arabia.

The 2008 World Recycling Convention &
Exhibition, to be held at the Fairmont Monte-
Carlo Hotel, will mark the BIR world recycling
organisation’s 60th Anniversary.
As always, the Convention programme will comprise
a series of meetings featuring high-profile guest speak-
ers. The General Assembly will be opened by a wel-
come address from His Serene Highness Prince Albert
II of Monaco. Subsequent keynote speaker will be Lord
Nicholas Stern of Brentford, who made headline news
around the world when he published his critically-ac-
claimed 700-page ‘Stern Review’ into the economic im-
pact of climate change.
Dr Mika Saariaho, Deputy Secretary General of the
International Iron and Steel Institute, will be keynote
speaker at the Ferrous Division meeting. His presen-
tation will address the future environmental chal-
lenges that the world steel industry will have to meet
in the coming decades.
During the Non-Ferrous Metals Division gathering,
London Metal Exchange Chief Executive Martin Ab-
bott will provide the keynote speech. Moreover, there
will be a round-table discussion involving major con-
sumers from around the world that will focus on supply
chain changes and projections for the future.
Chairman of the Stainless Steel & Special Alloys
Committee Michael Wright has approached Morgan
Stanley – the global financial services firm and market
leader in securities, asset management and credit ser-
vices – regarding the potential participation of an ex-
pert from its nickel research department.
Olaf Rintsch, President of the Textiles Division, has
invited Dr Joachim Wuttke from the German Federal
Environment Agency to give a guest presentation while
Pöyry Consulting, a global consulting and engineering
firm focusing on the energy, forest industry and infra-
structure & environment sectors, has been approached
by the Paper Division with a view to providing a senior
consultant to cover the development of the paper indus-
try worldwide and demand for recovered paper.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Tyres Committee
Barend Ten Bruggencate has issued an invitation to
speak in Monte-Carlo to Fazilet Cinaralp, Director
General of the European Tyre Manufacturers and Re-
cycling Association.
Henrik Harjula, Principal Administrator of the
OECD Environment Directorate, has accepted an invi-
tation from the International Environmental Council
to look ahead to issues that may impact on recyclers
over the next decade. Also to be present in Monte-Car-
lo, Katharina Kummer Peiry, Executive Secretary of
the Basel Convention on the Control of Transbound-
ary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Dis-
posal, will address the new challenges of the United
Nations Environment Programme.
In addition to the commodity sessions, three work-
shops are proposed on:
• Problems and solutions for scrap shipments in
containers to India and the Far East.
• End-of-life vehicles.
• Shipments to China and an update on AQSIQ regis-
tration.
BIR’s 2008 Spring Convention is set to be the most
successful convention in the history of the internation-
al recycling body. BIR is expecting to welcome around
1200 delegates and some 350 accompanying persons.
