Application: SCRAP PROCESSING
full use of its advantages.
With Pinnacle Engineering
Europe GmbH, SICON has a
fully-owned subsidiary which
can be considered the market
leader in the field of shredder
automation.
Dust removal technology
Under the name AirTuning,
SICON supplies dust removal
technology for new as well as
for older shredding systems which
achieves results well within all the
legal requirements relating to dust, vola-
tile organic compounds (VOCs) and dioxins.
This solution can work in combination with
the EcoRip such that entire dust removal can
be performed in a dry process.
In addition, SICON also supplies cleaning
systems for HMS and shear scrap – a solution
that is profitable for scrap processors and also
for steelworks. Benefits include 2–6 % yield
enhancement in arc furnaces, recovery of up
to 3 % non-ferrous metals and consequently
safer steel production at reduced energy costs,
resulting in amortisation periods of less than
12 months.
Non-ferrous downstream
Particular emphasis is placed on the pro-
cessing and recycling of shredder residue for
which a modular concept has been developed
that is geared precisely to the requirements
of shredder operators. Here, the focus is on
clean and complete recovery of metals such
as aluminium, stainless steel and copper. The
SICON-75, SICON-100 and SICON-120
are finely-tuned plant concepts resulting in
complete metal recovery in qualities allow-
ing direct utilisation in metallurgical melting
operations. Even the finest copper wires are
separated, yielding a metal-free waste fraction.
SICON can also provide solutions for the
non-metal fractions of shredder residue. Be
it for the production of substitute fuels or
plastics for recycling, SICON can offer the
process technology for a successful installa-
tion, enabling the shredder operator to run
his plant efficiently, cost-effectively and at a
competitive edge.
Customised solutions
SICON has positioned itself as a dedicated
and innovative machine and plant engineer-
ing company with a unique product portfo-
lio for the scrap recycling industry. Although
without its own production facilities, it nev-
ertheless increasingly offers machine and
system technology that has been developed
in-house. With its strong focus on customer
needs, the company looks to offer optimised
solutions and so the development of its own
machine and process technology is a logical
consequence.
The name SICON is derived by combin-
ing the words ‘SI’ for Siegen and ‘CON’ for
Consult and Construct; the company’s head-
quarters at Hilchenbach are in the Siegerland
region of Germany, an internationally re-
nowned location for steel production as well
as numerous world market leaders in the field
of machinery and plant engineering.
In the early years following its formation,
the company focused primarily on process
optimisation as well as related consulting and
planning services specifically for the process-
ing of shredder residue. From the beginning,
SICON developed new and innovative solu-
tions, the next logical step being to branch
out into the field of machinery and plant
engineering, taking sole responsibility for re-
alising projects as this was the only way the
developed solutions could be implemented
successfully.
The machines – including EcoShred, Air-
Sort and Polyfloat – are produced by renowned
machinery and plant manufacturers in close
co-operation with the SICON engineering
team and with a strict focus on quality.
Worldwide recognition
The company’s philosophy is to offer cus-
tomers individual solutions tailored to their
specific needs and problems. To this end, it
performs extensive tests with samples of the
material flows to be processed in order to be
able to develop the most appropriate process-
ing methods – in technical as well as economic
terms. When complete processing lines are re-
quired, SICON does not just pull ready-made
solutions off the shelf but co-operates closely
with the customer to develop and successfully
implement an individual solution based on its
15-plus years of experience.
SICON has received worldwide recogni-
tion for a recycling process developed to-
gether with the Volkswagen Group. With the
process technology developed through this
collaboration, more than 95% of shredder res-
idue components from end-of-life vehicles or
mixed scrap can be recycled. For this process,
jointly patented with Volkswagen, the com-
pany received the Environmental Award con-
ferred by the Federation of German Industry
(BDI) in the ‘Recycling and Waste Manage-
ment’ category, as well as the European Busi-
ness Award for the Environment.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
The Ecoshred Compact is a shredder wich
fully complies with today’s requirements for
the scrap and for the steel industry.
Producing dense and homogeneous shredded
scrap (>1.1 m3/t), its features include:
requirements and therefore investment
costs while ensuring high throughput rates
of up to 45 tonnes per hour at 1360 HP or
1000 kW (4 x 250 kW);
operator can operate the system, conse-
quently reducing personnel costs;
loads;
with optimised integration of control
functions to ensure lowest specific energy
costs; and
from vehicle bodies to mixed scrap or even
aluminium scrap without any restrictions.
