On a job safety and
noise protection mission
With safety and environmental protection high on the scrap recycler’s agenda on
both sides of the Atlantic, a bright future lies ahead for ILG. The German supplier
of protection systems for shredder and other recycling facilities here offers an
overview of his company’s expertise in this field.
E
urope, and especially Germany, repre-
sents ILG’s main market. But the safety
and environmental protection specialist
is also receiving an increasing number of or-
ders from the USA – or more precisely, from
European companies with US subsidiaries ‘as
they seem to aim for equal safety standards
globally, no matter where a facility is locat-
ed’, confirms ILG’s managing director Rolf
Schaffrath.
‘Noise increasingly impinges on our eve-
ryday lives,’ Schaffrath continues. ‘At the same
time, the recycling industry makes a major
contribution to environmental protection. It
is our mission to equip both recycling ma-
chinery and plants in such a way that it makes
them safer and friendlier to the environment.’
For more than 40 years, ILG (Industrie-
lärmschutz GmbH) has been working on re-
ducing noise levels in extractive industries. In
addition to its traditional plant engineering
division devoted to enclosing and cladding
processing equipment, the company special-
ises in improving labour protection and occu-
pational safety around shredding equipment.
For instance, ILG addresses the encapsulation
of a shredder and cabin controls.
New challenge
ILG started out 45 years ago building noise
barriers along motorways. In collaboration
with Lindemann, the manufacturer that in-
stalled the first shredder plants in Europe, the
issues of noise reduction and occupational
safety compliance were tackled. ‘We were
quickly able to meet the requirements for
noise reduction,’ says Schaffrath. ‘However,
compliance with the demands of occupational
safety posed a new challenge for us.’
ILG has developed a number of highly-
efficient noise reduction systems, with partic-
ular emphasis on complying with labour pro-
tection and occupational safety. In addition
to pressure-shock-resistant noise protection
enclosures for shredders, ILG has also created
splinter protection systems which represent
a substantial improvement in occupational
safety relating to shredder plants.
Continuous innovation
Thanks to continuous innovation, ILG
offers bespoke solutions for individual re-
quirements. Schaffrath explains: ‘Previously,
we found it hard to demonstrate to shredder
operators the benefits of and need for enclo-
sures due to, for example, inconvenience dur-
ing maintenance and repair. Nowadays, the
housing and cladding of shredders are integral
both to the approval process for such a ma-
chine and to operator protection.’

can be devised to meet any requirement. First-
