Global Recycling Day set for March 18!

Worldwide – The first-ever Global Recycling Day to be organised by the BIR world recycling organisation will take place on March 18 next year, it was confirmed at BIR’€™s latest convention and exhibition in Hong Kong. The date will also mark the 70th anniversary of the formation of BIR.

Global Recycling Day will present the perfect opportunity to inform the public, governments and policy-makers about the crucial role played by the recycling industry in ‘creating a clean and sustainable environment for us all and for future generations’, insisted BIR world president Ranjit Baxi.

Having identified the planet’s six leading natural resources of water, air, coal, oil, natural gas and minerals, he expressed the heartfelt wish for recyclables to be recognised as ‘the seventh resource’.

And he added: ‘If we can just get 5-10% of the world’s 7 billion people to make one positive recycling change in their lives on Global Recycling Day, it will have a massive impact.’

During the course of 2017, BIR will be announcing a number of initiatives to mark Global Recycling Day, including partnerships and calls for action. He urged BIR members and national associations to consider practical ways in which they could help make the event a success.

Speaking in Hong Kong, Salam Sharif – president of the Bureau of Middle East Recycling and chairman of BIR’s ambassadors committee – came up with the suggestion that recyclers around the world should sign off all their emails with a note underlining their personal commitment to the March 18 initiative.
