Asia – German recycling major ALBA is continuing to expand its activities in China, having agreed to build a high-tech recycling park with its Chinese partners Chengdu Techcent Environment and Deyang Construction Investment.
The signing ceremony has taken place at a meeting in Berlin between Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel and China’s prime minister Li Keqiang.
The 3.3-square-kilometre Deyang Resource Recycling Industrial Park is to be built south east of the city of Deyang in China’s Sichuan province.
According to ALBA, the park’s concept provides for ‘all types of waste and all treatment and recycling steps’ in one place using state-of-the-art equipment. It is claimed the park will become ‘a model’ in China for testing sustainable waste management and recycling concepts for use in the country’s mega cities. Some Euro 1 billion will be invested in the project.
The park contract follows on from a multi-million recycling project currently being finalised by ALBA near Hong Kong’s international airport; this is scheduled to be opened by the end of the year.
The contract includes the construction of a recycling facility for electronic scrap as well as operation of the collection and recycling system for a 10-year period. Enquiries for parks in other regions have already been received, according to ALBA.
‘China is very interested in rapid progress in terms of environmental protection,’ comments the company’s ceo Axel Schweitzer. ‘We want to develop these kinds of high-tech recycling parks, like the one planned now, in various Chinese regions.’
