Paper recycling pioneers win top EPRC recognition

Belgium – Favini and Aspapel were the big winners at the latest European Paper Recycling Awards as they took the top prizes on offer in the respective categories of ‘Innovative Technologies and R&D’ and ‘Information and Education’.

A global producer of packaging for the luxury and fashion industries, Favini was recognised for its ground-breaking Remake papermaking process whereby 20% of the fibre is provided by scrap from Italy’s leather industry.

Meanwhile, Spanish pulp and paper association Aspapel was rewarded for its Blue Birdies project designed to raise awareness of the separate collection of paper across the country’s municipalities.

The awards are run by the European Paper Recycling Council to highlight the best paper recycling projects across the continent.

The council’s secretary Ulrich Leberle, who is also raw materials director at the Confederation of European Paper Industries, adds: ‘Whether it be inventive companies or municipalities willing to ”step outside the box”, their role is crucial in helping the value chain reach its 74% recycling rate by 2020.’
