Africa – Rwanda’s first e-scrap recycling facility was opened yesterday in Bugesera district, Eastern Province. A total of Rwf1.1 billion (About US$ 1.3 million) has been invested in the venture, which is said to represent a major step forward regarding sustainable waste management in the country while creating ‘green’ jobs.
The electronics recycling plant is a part of Rwanda’s National E-waste Management Strategy that aims to boost recycling best practices, so KTpress reports. The site will also provide refurbished computers to the Rwanda Education Board for distribution to local primary schools. The volume of e-scrap generated in every year is estimated to be around 6%.
The e-cycling initiative is overseen by the Ministry of Trade and Industry as well as the National Climate Change and Environment Fund and a group of supporting institutions.
Government official Innocent Karangwa affirms that the facility is already operational. ‘There is an opportunity to officially launch the facility and celebrate the success of this transformational investment,’ he comments with enthusiasm.
