Global – More than 1 million tonnes of clothing are consumed in the UK every year. And now apparel brand and retailer C&A is hoping to drive the idea of circular fashion ‘to a new level’ with its ‘Wear the Change’ campaign.
C&A wants 100% of the cotton it sources and at least two-thirds of the overall raw materials it uses to be ‘more sustainable’ by 2020.
Its new ‘Wear the Change’ fashion label, which will hit the stores this month, is being hailed as an important step towards this goal. Around half of C&A’s items in stores are part of the ‘Wear the Change’ label.
Last spring, C&A became the world’s first clothing producer to launch ‘gold level’ cradle-to-cradle certified T-shirts and jeans as well as jackets, meaning they are ‘designed to be recycled’. The eco-friendly jeans and jackets are made with recycled cotton and recycled polyester, while the T-shirts are made out of 100% bio-cotton.
Platinum level is the highest-possible certification on offer from the Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Institute, initiated by Professor Michael Braungart and William McDonough.
