Green carpet couture a ‘perfect marriage of ethics and aesthetics’

United States – More actresses and models are turning to eco-fashion when attending red carpet events. This week, UK star Emma Watson was declared the belle of the annual Met Ball fundraiser in New York because of her unique Calvin Klein costume made from recycled plastic bottles.

Watson wore a black and white five piece look created from three different types of eco-yarns; the futuristic costume also incorporated organic silk and zippers made from recycled content. All post-consumer PET bottles were sourced and processed exclusively in Italy.

Top designer Calvin Klein said he was inspired by the event’s theme “Fashion in the Age of Technology” and acknowledged that plastic ‘is one of the world’s biggest pollutants’. The outfit was part of a larger ‘green carpet challenge’ meant to boost the awareness of sustainable apparel.

Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong’o was also spotted wearing eco couture by Calvin Klein. Her jade coloured sequin dress was another example of ‘a perfect marriage of ethics and aesthetics’, the design team notes.
