NASCAR races towards ‘green’ tyre use

United States – Two US automotive players have teamed up, with the NASCAR auto sports association selecting Liberty Tire Recycling as the official tyre recycler for the organisation’s month-long, industry-wide Race to Green initiative designed to reduce the carbon footprint of the nation’s sports sector. Liberty will join other NASCAR partners in the comprehensive recycling programme, including Coca-Cola, MillerCoors, Creative Recycling, Goodyear, Safety-Kleen and Sprint. According to the race car brand, such collaborations have enabled the programme to recycle roughly 120 000 Goodyear tyres each year across its top three national series.

‘By recycling more than 140 million tyres annually, we reclaim nearly 1.5 billion pounds of rubber for innovative, eco-friendly products,’ states Thomas Carter, Liberty’s vice president of alternative fuels. ‘We look forward to enhancing NASCAR Green’s best-in-class recycling programme by keeping its discarded tyres out of landfills and transforming them into smart, sustainable products that improve people’s lives.’

According to NASCAR’s chief sales officer Jim O’Connell, Liberty Tire Recycling has positioned itself as ‘a leader in tyre recycling innovation’. The company’s products, including rubberised asphalt, will be used to repave racetracks and parking lots at NASCAR Home Track facilities across the country.
