PET recycling ceases at Horizon’s Fujairah plant

Oman – Drinks and bottle manufacturer National Mineral Water Co. has decided to shut the gates to its United Arab Emirates-based PET recycling subsidiary run under the name Horizon Technologies FZE.

The Fujairah facility, which was devoted to bottle-to-bottle recycling, is being closed because, shareholders believe, it was not viable to keep operations running in light of the ‘€˜unresolved regulatory constraints imposed by local agencies’€™.

The Horizon plant was attempting to benefit from increased local consumption of PET bottles by turning them into clean flakes for sale and reuse. Insiders are claiming that, as a matter of government policy, Fujairah did not allow the importation of used PET bottles to provide feedstock for the plant because it was considered waste material.

According to earlier reports, the facility was processing around 600 to 700 tonnes per month, accounting for 12% of the United Arab Emirates’€™ overall consumption. However, the plant had the capacity to recycle 2000 tonnes per month.
