EuPR working group on mixed plastics recycling

Europe – A European Association of Plastics Recyclers (EuPR) working group has been created to co-ordinate mixed plastics recycling initiatives. According to the organisation, there is significant untapped potential for growth in the mixed plastics waste fraction.

Out of the 15 million tonnes of post-consumer waste arising from packaging in Europe, around 10% can be considered to form possible mixed plastics fractions. Various collection schemes are looking into this stream as a means of fulfilling their recycling targets. EuPR says new developments of this kind are welcomed by plastics recyclers as they help increase Europe’s resource efficiency, create jobs and reduce environmental impact.

The new working group is being chaired by Dr Michael Scriba who is CEO and shareholder of mtm plastics GmbH. ‘The aim of this group is to fight the current market failures that are blocking the development of mixed plastics recycling in Europe,’ he explains. The group also wants to make clear to all stakeholders that mixed plastics are not necessarily pre-destined for energy recovery.
