AWS Eco Plastics: rising from the ashes

United Kingdom – PET plastics recycler AWS Eco Plastics has opened a new bottle sorting facility at Hemswell in the UK – some 14 months after its previous sorting and storage base was destroyed by fire.

Capable of processing more than 100 000 tonnes of waste plastic per year, the factory is claimed to be the largest and most sophisticated in Europe. Costing more than £17 million (US$ 27 million), the facility incorporates 17 polymer/optical sorters and has been equipped by Stadler, TiTech and Herbold. The plant boasts a flexible output of 11 different plastic streams, with food-grade PET as a key market. The company expects to increase annual processing capacity at Hemswell to 140 000 tonnes by mid-2011. With the UK projected to recycle 300 000 tonnes of plastic bottles per annum by the end of 2010, AWS Eco Plastics says the facility will then be capable of accepting almost 50% of the national total. The business employs over 130 people, including 110 at the processing site. AWS Eco Plastics has acquired additional adjacent land for expansion.
