Sonoco Recycling adds MRFs to portfolio

USA – The recycling division of US paper manufacturer Sonoco is investing in a new material reclamation facility (MRF) to treat South Carolina’s residential and commercial waste. To be erected in Charleston, the aim is to have the US$ 1 million facility completed by February next year.

With this new development, Sonoco Recycling is aiming to grow its capacity by 25%, increasing processing capabilities by expanding the list of materials accepted in Charleston County. The MRF will be equipped to process residential single-stream materials.

Sonoco has also completed the acquisition of American Recycling from Greenville. This MRF operation is expected significantly to increase Sonoco Recycling’s ability to meet rising demand in the Upstate. Jim Brown, Vice President of Sonoco Recycling, comments: ‘The Greenville MRF will help accelerate Sonoco Recycling’s current goal of doubling the volume of tons collected by 2014.’

Founded in 2003, American Recycling is a leading processor of recyclable materials in south-east USA, with plastics and various grades of paper making up the majority of the materials processed. For its part, Sonoco Recycling annually collects more than 3 million tons of OCC as well as various grades of paper, metals and plastics.
