Sonoco Recycling has acquired American Recycling, a privately owned recovered paper recycler located in North Carolina.
American Recycling processes almost 30 000 tonnes of recovered fibre annually at its Asheville material recovery facility. The business expects to generate approximately US$ 9 million (EUR 7.9 million) in sales in 2021 and it is strategically located relatively close to Sonoco’s uncoated recycled paperboard mill in Newport, Tennessee.
‘This acquisition provides our mill operations with a stable, lower-cost supply of recovered fibre with the opportunity to grow volumes in the region,’ comments Palace Stepps, division vice president and general manager of Sonoco Recycling.
The company, which counts as a top 10 recycler in the US, collects around 2.8 million tonnes of old corrugated containers, mixed paper, metals and plastics per year. It owns five material recovery facilities and 20 recycling centres serving more than 100 communities in which kerbside-collected residential and commercial materials are processed.
