International Paper focuses on corrugated

United States – US-headquartered paper recycler International Paper has signed a long-term agreement with Texas-based Balcones Resources to recover old corrugated cardboard containers (OCC) and use them in production of new ones.

The Balcones contract will support a sustainability initiative under which International Paper is aiming for a 15% increase in recovery of OCC by 2020. The group already recovers, processes or facilitates the sale of more than 6 million tonnes of fibre throughout the US each year via its 23 facilities worldwide.

‘By working with generators and suppliers to identify and capture new sources of recyclable materials, we’re confident that we can further increase our recovery rates in the coming years,’ stated Thomas Cleves, International Paper’s vice president and general manager, containerboard and recycling.

Balcones Resources was established in 1994 as an environmental services holding company. It processing roughly 13 000 tonnes of recyclables per month and claims to be the largest independent recycling company in the Southwest USA.
