Furore over recycling holy books

Afghanistan – Thousands of Afghans have attacked a paper mill in the country’s capital Kabul for ‘desecrating’ Islam’s holy book by recycling copies of the Qur’an. This latest development follows a series of Afghan rallies against the burning of the Qur’an in the USA in early April.

Furious protesters destroyed parts of the company building and torched its furniture over allegations that it recycled school books – including copies of the Qur’an – in the making of toilet paper. They claimed that some 3 tonnes of books were recycled in the factory located in the city’s eastern suburbs, and demanded that those involved be prosecuted. According to local police authorities, the company’s chief executive has been arrested and investigations are on-going.
