The ‘recycling credentials’ of sheet metal

Europe – The European Lead Sheet Industry Association (ELSIA) has announced it will support the European Commission’€™s technical secretariat in developing criteria to measure the environmental performance of sheet metals.

Sustainability experts from the aluminium, copper, lead, steel and mining sectors will work together to uncover the unique recycling characteristics of these metals in a three-year ‘environmental footprint’ pilot project.

‘Lead sheet is one of the most recyclable and sustainable metals and this project will help ELSIA demonstrate the strong sustainability credentials of lead sheet and ensure that the most appropriate methodologies are used to reflect this,’ said ELSIA chairman Ben Travers.

EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik added: ‘To boost sustainable growth, consumers need to be able to identify genuinely green products and companies, and this is an important step in that direction.’ He was certain that reliable and comparable information about the environmental impacts would bring ‘increased transparency’ and ‘build trust with consumers, business partners and investors’.

The Brussels-based non-ferrous industry association Eurometaux will co-ordinate the project with European associations representing aluminium, copper, lead and the mining industry. Technical assistance will be provided by several other sector specialists, such as Aurubis and ArcelorMittal.
