Italy – International industrial services provider Harsco Corporation has been awarded a six-year and Euro 41 million contract by Alfa Acciai Group, one of Italy’s largest electric arc furnace (EAF) steel producers. Specifically, Harsco has been assigned the task of developing and managing a new scrap yard for the mill while also overseeing the processing of its EAF slag.
Following significant investments initiated by Alfa Acciai, the collaboration with the American company will lead to the replacement of older equipment with modern slag handling carriers. An advanced weighing system and GPS detection system will be installed in the bid for full control of slag transportation and optimal scrap yard operation. According to Galdino J. Claro, Executive Vice President and CEO of Harsco Metals & Minerals, operations are expected to be under way by the end of this year.
The Alfa Acciai mill is situated in the industrial city of Brescia and produces a wide range of reinforced steel bars. It has also developed process innovations to give its products special mechanical properties which make them particularly suitable for use in areas of seismic activity.
